Card Games for Large Groups: Sly3 Party Mode for 7 to 12 Players (Two Decks)
Sly3 is a card game for large groups. One deck seats 2 to 6 players, and two decks shuffled together seat 7 to 12 in Party Mode. A round still takes about 15 minutes, nobody sits out, and the loud moments get louder with every extra chair. If you've got a reunion, a holiday table, or just a lot of people in one house, here's how it works.
How Party Mode Works
Shuffle two Sly3 decks together and deal as usual: three cards face-down, three face-up on top, three in hand. The rules don't change. Play equal or higher, pick up the pile if you can't, clear your hand, then your face-up cards, then flip your face-down cards blind.
What changes is the pace. With twice the cards in play there are twice as many exact matches on the table, and the Chaos Rule lets anyone holding one play it out of turn. With twelve people that means the pile almost never sits still and the turn skips around the table in ways nobody can track. It's bedlam in the best sense.
Reunions, Holidays and the Big Table
Big gatherings are hard on games. People arrive late, ages run from 7 to 78, and half the room has never played anything more complicated than a standard deck. Sly3 handles all three. Late arrivals get dealt into the next round, which is never more than 15 minutes away. Mixed ages play together because there's nothing to read and no one gets eliminated. And the teach is one sentence: get rid of your cards first, playing equal or higher.
It needs about as much table as a dinner plate: a draw pile, a play pile, and everyone's three face-up cards in front of them.
Running a Table of Twelve
Start the first round in Relaxed mode, with the Chaos Rule off, so the newcomers learn the rhythm. Turn Chaos on for round two once everyone's cleared a hand.
Make room for the pile. With twelve people playing out of turn, the middle of the table gets busy. Push the glasses back.
Use the stacks rule. You can play several cards of the same value at once, and four of a kind in a row acts as a Swipe and clears the pile. Big tables hit this constantly.
A Champion for the Night
When a big group wants a winner, play OutFoxed: the last player still holding cards drops out each round, and the last one standing takes it. With twelve players it runs for a while, which is exactly what a holiday evening needs.
One Deck or Two?
Up to six players, one deck is all you need. For seven to twelve, a second copy unlocks Party Mode. If two households each have one, they shuffle together the next time everyone's in the same room.
