New Card Games in 2026: Sly3, an Indie Card Game From Virginia

What's New About It

Most new card games add something to your turn. Sly3 takes something away: the safety of waiting for it.

Any player holding a card that exactly matches the top of the pile can play it immediately, out of turn. Play jumps to their left and skips whoever was waiting. That's the Chaos Rule, and it's on by default.

You also clear three zones in order: your hand, three face-up Open Cards, and three face-down Sly Cards that you play blind. The finish is a run of flips nobody at the table can predict, including the person flipping.

Four special cards do the rest. A 7 forces the next player low. A 9 skips them. A Wild Paw plays on anything. A Swipe clears the pile and hands you another turn.

Where It Came From

The family behind Sly3 was traveling in Spain and brought out a card game they usually played at home, this time with new friends. Every round was electric, faster and funnier than usual. They wondered whether it was the people or the moment.

Then they noticed the deck was broken. It wasn't a standard 52-card deck. It had too few low cards and too many high ones.

That was the answer. Jayme, the game's designer, started tuning the card mix on purpose, balancing speed, difficulty and fun until the happy accident became a design. Sly3 is that deck, built deliberately, with the out-of-turn rule and the blind finish written around it.

Who Makes It

J2A2 Ventures is a two-person company in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Sly3 is its first game. The deck is designed in Charlottesville and printed in Winter Garden, Florida. There's no crowdfunding campaign. The game sells directly from sly3game.com, on Amazon, and through a small number of independent game stores.

Five Ways to Play

Standard keeps the Chaos Rule on and is how we'd recommend playing. Relaxed turns it off for new players and young kids. Increased Challenge removes Swipes from the deck two at a time. OutFoxed is elimination: the last player still holding cards drops out each round. Party Mode shuffles two decks together for 7 to 12 players.

Is It for You?

Sly3 is for the table that wants a fast game before the long one, the family with a 7-year-old and a grandparent in the same room, and the group that likes a game a little loud. It isn't for anyone after a two-hour strategy session or a cooperative puzzle. A round is 15 minutes, and then you deal again.
