Travel Card Games: One Deck for Road Trips and Camping
Sly3 is a travel card game almost by accident. It's one 72-card deck in a box about 4 by 5.5 inches and an inch thick, it weighs under half a pound, and a round takes about 15 minutes. It seats 2 to 6, plays from age 7 up, and needs a flat surface about the size of a tray. Here's where it goes and how it plays there.
What Travels Well
A game travels well when there's nothing to lose and nothing to set up. Sly3 has no board, no pieces, no batteries, and no scoring pad. The whole game is the deck. If a card goes under the seat you'll find it at the next stop, and the game keeps going without it in the meantime. The box fits a jacket pocket, a glove box, or the side pocket of a backpack.
Road Trips
Not in the moving car, please. But at the rest stop, the diner table while you wait for food, and the hotel room at the end of the day, Sly3 fills the gap exactly. A round is 15 minutes with new players and about five once everyone knows it, which is the length of a wait for a check. The teach is one sentence: get rid of your cards first, playing equal or higher.
Camping
A picnic table is a perfect Sly3 table. Deal three face-down, three face-up on top, three in hand, and put the mug on the draw pile if the wind picks up. The game needs about as much room as a dinner plate: a draw pile, a play pile, and each player's three face-up cards. With no reading and no small parts, it plays fine by lantern light, and the Blind Flip at the end of each round is louder outdoors.
Airports and Trains
Space is the problem here. Sly3 plays 2 players on a tray table, though the sweet spot is 4 to 6. Two-player rounds are quick and close. Turn on Relaxed mode so nobody's lunging across the aisle to play out of turn, and keep the Chaos Rule for when you've got a real table again.
Packing Two
If you're traveling to meet family, a second copy in the other household's bag means Party Mode when you arrive: two decks shuffled together seat 7 to 12. Same rules, same 15 minutes, much bigger table.
