Why the Dinner Table Is the Best Table

Everyone is already sitting down. The phones are (mostly) away. The ages run from the youngest to the oldest in the house, and everyone's in a good mood because they've just eaten. That's a hard moment to get any other way, and it lasts about twenty minutes before someone drifts off. A game that starts fast and ends on time is the only kind that fits.

What the Game Needs From the Table

Push the glasses back. Sly3 needs a draw pile, a play pile, and each player's three face-up cards in front of them. That's it. No board, no pieces, no scoring pad. If the table is crowded, the face-down cards can sit under the face-up ones, which is how they're dealt anyway.

The 15-Minute Round

The teach is one sentence: get rid of your cards first, playing equal or higher on the pile. Deal three face-down, three face-up on top, three in hand, and start. Play the first round in Relaxed mode, where everyone waits their turn. Save the Chaos Rule, where anyone holding an exact match can jump in out of turn, for round two. The special cards explain themselves as they land: a 7 sends the next player low, a 9 skips them, a Wild Paw plays on anything, a Swipe clears the pile.

A first round takes about 15 minutes. One playtester put the whole appeal in six words: "Easy to learn. Light-hearted. Short."

When the Table Wants One More

It usually does. Once everyone knows the game, rounds are often only about five minutes, so "one more" is a real option and not a promise. If the table wants a winner before dessert, play OutFoxed: the last player still holding cards drops out each round until one is left.

When the table is long and the cousins are in town, shuffle two decks together for Party Mode and seat up to 12. Same rules, same 15 minutes, twice the noise.
